Okay, so I wasn't able to show my new blog as soon as I wanted! It's almost done, but I want to add new photos....
I haven't been able to edit for the past few days because my desktop computer went a little nutso. Thanks to Lance and Tracy coming to my rescue, I will be back up and running soon and at least able to edit on another computer. I will be shipping my sad computer off to the factory to get fixed.

I recently had a birthday and getting all these cards and phone calls from friends and family made me reflect on my life. It happened right around a day or 2 of the "25 random things about me" notes that are floating around on facebook. I started writing them and thought, this would be a great blog post! Things about me that you may or may not know, may or may not be interested in, but it's part of who I am.
Even if you don't ever publish a list like this about yourself, it's fun to do. It really makes you THINK. Okay, so here goes!

1. I am a Christian but I haven’t always been. Ask me about my tarot card past.

3.I LOVE to sing….unfortunately I am very shy about it, but I plan to bust out of this before I die. Anyone want to start a band? This reminds me….I met a few guys once that wanted to have a band. We got together about 5 times. I LOVED it. What a release. Unfortunately, it never panned out.

4.I love hello kitty and blythe dolls. Yes, I realize I am not 12.

5.My mom’s cancer has changed me and my life forever.

6.I love to make people laugh, including myself. (I can be very silly…beware!).

7.I have the most amazing hubby, family and friends. The circle seems to be growing….I think I have more friends than I’ve ever had…..they have lots of nicknames for me: Jules, Jule, Julie.

8.I love to write. I think writing by hand is a lost art….I love journals and new sharp pencils.

9.I want to learn to surf. I am a beachgirl….the ocean and sand are heaven to me.

10.I am not sure if I want kids. I love them….just not sure.

11.I was very shy growing up. I had to learn to be more social. Even now, if I spend too much time alone, I become a little introverted, melancholic.

12.I have changed my haircolor many times from blonde, to red, to dark brown, black, back to blonde.

13.People always think I look familiar or they have met me. I think I have more than one twin…... Kind of weird but cool in the fact that it seems to make others comfortable with me. I love that.

14.I love clothes. Not name brands, just stuff I love because it’s different and cute—I want to learn to sew.

15.I have a skateboard. I am surprised I haven’t killed myself on that thing.

16.I have always been artistic.

17.I think WAY too much. It sometimes keeps me awake at night...Do not let my childlike demeanor fool you.....I love deep conversations about life, people, spirituality and can talk about these things for hours.

18.I can’t stand snobby people…..my take, people are NOT born that way. Be YOURSELF.

19.I want to be remembered when I die as someone who was kind and loving.

20.I hate to cook. If I was rich, I would hire a chef!

21.I love gifts and love giving them.

22.I like to match my socks to my outfit even if you can’t see them.

23.I sometimes “sing” answers when people ask me questions.

24.I am not a fan of makeup but I am pretty obsessed with skincare. I grew up at the beach and was always very tan….saw a scary wrinkled lady once who looked like that woman on “something about mary.” That did it for me. Sunscreen is my friend.

25.I like to make up my own words…..I might call you a pootypop head if you make me mad. Haha!!

What a week! I am pretty darn tired, but extremely inspired. Shane did a kick booty job conducting his Step-Up workshop at folly beach! It was held at my family's house and I couldn't be happier that we were able to do it there. The atmosphere was perfect! A room full of artists and an amazing teacher...not to mention 2 awesomely cool guest speakers, photographer Punam Bean and DJ Joe Bunn. I learned a TON and made so many new friends. I am so inspired!
It wrapped up today and we went and had fun at taco boy and the"Folly Beach Brewing Company."

Hi All!
I have been attending a 3 day workshop this week with Shane Snider. Today is the last day. I will be blogging about this in detail soon! It's been awesome and so much fun to meet new people and learn. I shot this yesterday on our photoshoot at lowndesgrove plantation. If the bride looks familiar, she's my (new) friend Allison, who was married recently and I photographed her portraits. She was so great to come out and be one of our models for the day!

Relay for Life

This morning I stopped by my local bank and had the best conversation with a woman who works there. She told me about the upcoming "relay for life" with the american cancer society, that's going to be in summerville. I decided to be a sponser with my photo biz and made a donation. :-) I am very supportive of cancer awareness and support since I have had many loved ones touched by this awful disease.
Unfortunately I am working the 2 days they are having it, but I am so glad I'm able to be a part. Next year I will find out ahead of time!

This weekend I helped my friend Ashley at the Columbia bridal fair. It was alot of fun! I had never been to one of these events, so it was interesting! There were so many vendors there! Everyone was super nice and I got to see my planner friend Melanie (By Invitation Only), who I love!

Creative Inspiration

I have always loved anything artsy. This week, I finally took some time to make stuff! Instead of going out and buying generic art for the walls, I have been framing photos and making my own "prints." I did paint a picture too, but wasn't too excited about it---starting from scratch and I'll show you all that one later! :-)
Being creative in other ways definitely helps with my photography....helps me think outside the box!

I made this with felt and scissors. I decided on the
"picture" in my mind and cut them out by hand.

Gown Boutique of Charleston

I met the sweet ladies, Terri & Krista, who own the Gown boutique about a year ago, and they recently asked me to do a photo shoot for them. I had a great time! Chloe the pup seemed to love the camera too! (she does look like she is sticking her tongue out at me at the end though. ha!).

Yesterday I went out to folly beach to get beachy pictures and shots of the lighthouse for a friend. It was an awesome day to go out! It was like summer.....
I miss folly! I have been so busy I haven't had much time to go, so I was so excited to be there. Of course I made a few friends along the way.

I met Frankie Turner about 4 years ago. She has her own flower business ("Flowers by Frankie") and does gorgeous bouquets and arrangements for weddings! It also doesn't hurt that she is so sweet and fun! :-)
She recently asked me to take a few family "christmas" photos and some "headshots" of her....We had alot of fun amidst the strange heat wave in december!

This morning a friend sent me a link to a site I had never heard of, called "I am Second." In the middle of sitting here working, I stopped to take a look. I had no idea what it was about, but as I began watching one of the videos shown, I was drawn in. I was so completely moved.
Most of you all know I'm a huge Jason Castro fan, so I'm choosing to post his "story" from youtube here.

Sally & Hamilton are married!

I met Sally at my friend Marni's wedding not too long ago (has it been over a year Marni??!). Marni asked if I was available and I was so excited when Sally and Hamilton decided to have me shoot their wedding. I had so much fun and got to see my friend Leslie, who made everyone beautiful!
It took place out on Sally's mom's gorgeous property, in Wadmalaw. If you've never been there, you should go. It's a bit of a drive but so worth it! It was my kind of place.....right on the water, HUGE beautiful trees--with swings!
It clouded up and rained a "little" during the ceremony, but that made it even more romantic.
It was a blast y'all! thanks so much for having me there. ;-)

Back in the day...

Last week in Savannah, Mat and I ate lunch at this awesome little bakery called "back in the day bakery." It was so quaint and cozy. I loved all the little vintage signs and the food was YUMmy! The owner was sweet to let me document my stay and capture some images of this great place that I will definitely return to!
The most interesting thing happened......
I was checking out the wall (where they have a bulletin board) after eating and heard "music" from the back of the store. It was loud enough that I knew it wasn't a radio or someone's phone ringing. It sounded like someone playing an instrument!
I peeked my head in the back and this little boy was playing a harmonica! No joke. He was too shy to "perform" in front of the crowd that was there, so I asked him to play for me. He did and I of course HAD to have a photo. He told me he was 7 years old and was trying to raise money to help people in africa. I was touched by his thoughtfulness and drive to do something "more" even at seven years old. I will never forget him. :-)

Photography Workshop with Shane Snider!

I met Shane at the open source photo seminar recently and immediately liked him, his photo style and approach to his business. Not only is Shane an insanely talented photographer, he is an awesome speaker.
After the seminar I suggested a workshop at my family's beachhouse on folly and he said okay!
I am so excited to be helping with this, AND to have it at the house. You can't beat an awesome class with a view of the folly river. He will also have 2 guest speakers, Punam Bean and Joe Bunn.

The last time my husband and I went to savannah, I came across this amazing little store called "@ Home Vintage General." I could barely contain myself when I walked in this place! It is a artsy-crafty-vintage-lovers DREAM....
Liz, the owner of this shop, has unbelievable taste in choosing her inventory. She has something unique to any shop I've ever been in. You won't need to bother with etsy if you visit. It's all there.

I met Liz (super cool lady!) this week when I was visiting and she was so sweet to let me capture some images of the place. I was really excited to hear she is planning an online store soon! Check out her site and blog for updates on this, and check out the store if you are ever in Savannah--You won't be disappointed. :-)

This week during the osp seminar, everyone broke into groups led by different people. Somehow I volunteered myself to be the "subject" of the photos. oh yay! the most goofy/not-comfortable-in-front-of-the-camera girl! haha. I am trying to LEARN not to be so critical of myself in photos (aren't we ALL?).
Anyway, Matt McGraw, who is a super talented (and hilarious) dude, shot these and sent them to me. He's the guy behind me in the last photo.

This week was SOOO BUSY but amazing. Thanks to my friend Brooke, who told me about a "photography seminar" through the osp forum here in town, I was able to go, learn a ton and meet so many nice and insanely talented photographers. It was great for me for too many reasons to list here! My only regret is that I didn't capture images of all of my new friends. Luckily many other people did!
It was organized by Jill Higgins (who I met I think a year ago!), Shane Synder, and Jason Tench.
I got to hear the speakers: Amber and Nathan Holritz, Carrie Viohl, Kevin Swan, Shane Snyder and David Jay(who is the "founder" of the osp forum). I feel so lucky to have been there!
At the end of the week I attended a "lighting workshop," held by Chris from Azul Photography. Chris is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet and such an awesome teacher! The class was small, which was great....we had so much fun. The best part was no one made fun of my broken out face! haha.
I have a few from the day--the little doggie is in there just because I thought he was SO CUTE! haha.

Yesterday I had a great time with my friend Tracy, helping her with an engagement session! We had so much fun downtown and at folly with the cutest couple. I am dying to see the photos!

I had so much fun on friday with Liana, who is getting married so soon (december!). It was a gorgeous day and thanks to a friend who let us use a family member's yard, we had a beautiful setting to work with! You will notice alot of different "looks" in the photos. We played around with hair down, pinned up, flower, no flower,birdcage veil. Yay for props!
How do I end up with all these cool girls (and couples!) to work with?! Seriously, my job is so amazing and I am so thankful to be doing something I am so passionate about, and to have such a great time with everyone I work with.

Vivian Lee was born Sept. 16, and I had the pleasure of capturing this tiny beautiful girl today! I met her mom Stacy this year at the william aiken house, where we were both working at a wedding. (She was setting up a cake from her insanely cute bakery "Lady Fingers" in west ashley). We talked about photos and planned to get together!
It was fun to see Stacy, her parents (that's her dad's hand with Vivian's), and little Vivi!

I had the most fun a few weeks ago doing this family session! It's not every day the group gets together, especially this one...Some live in England! I met them at the beachhouse they were renting and spent a few hours capturing moments with the kids and a few posed family portraits.
The "bride" Jan and her (now) hubby were getting married that week and wanted to document the stay. What a gorgeous day.....

Wednesday was the funniest day! I was on my way to meet Ginny and her mom Martie downtown for photos. I got to the agreed upon spot, only to see 3 guys with cupid outfits on, out in the cold having their photo taken!(maybe a fraternity stunt for halloween??). I called Ginny and said," you will not believe this unless you see this...."
We all agreed we should have taken Ginny's portraits with the "cupids" in the background. So FUNNY!
Anyway, we had an awesome time doing her portraits. Ginny is super comfortable with the camera and looked beautiful. I can't wait to shoot the wedding in November. See you soon girly!

I met Allison for the first time this past Tuesday. We had SO much fun doing these portraits! I sometimes take the beauty of the area for granted, and this location reminded me of how amazing this city is . I was in awe of the view from Allison's mom's backyard, especially when the sun was setting!
We almost got completely covered in nats when it got dark, but it was worth it! I had a great time afterwards chatting it up with her, her mom and "the sisters." :-)

Sorry I haven't posted in a while. My life has been NUTS as usual. :-)
My dad had to take my mom to the emergency room after she fell down the stairs. We weren't exactly sure what caused the fall....she may have just lost her balance.
I was SO thankful to be able to rearrange some appointments and go up to NC to help! It was a stressful time, but mom made it through. She's back home now and my dad is just trying to decide what to do next. Mom still has cancer in her brain, and unfortunately the doc said there is some deterioration I guess as a result of her full brain radiation last fall.
Mom is still so confused most of the time, but she has such a funny sense of humor! The girls at Duke hospital loved her and she loved THEM. She made friends with everyone. One nurse asked her at one point if she needed anything and my mom replied,"oh, your friendship is enough." I thought that was so sweet.
We are still praying for her and hoping for the best!
Hope all is well with everyone out there in cyberspace.....

I had so much fun shooting Natalie and Peter's wedding this past saturday. It was held on seabrook island and it could not have been a more gorgeous day! I love beach weddings. There is just something about being near the water that makes everyone relaxed and light-hearted. Natalie and her friends were so funny! I felt like I had known them forever..
I was also in great company with the groom and his buds...alot of the group is into film, photography and acting. Artsy people are always so much fun! I am looking forward to seeing Natalie and Peter again for some fun downtown shots when they come back to visit.....

oh! I almost forgot. Check out grandpa who is 98 ("and a half," he said) years old! He was so cute and carries his (and his late wife's) wedding photo from the 1930's. He was dancing!

Last weekend Mat (my hubby in the green shirt below...looking pretty serious) and I went to watch his sister Gina, play tennis. It was the first time I have ever seen her play! I brought along my camera to document the event, but had to make the best of a tiny spot to shoot through (I had to crack the gate open).
She did such a great job! Go Girl!! She and her partner won their match that day, won the next day, and the team won the state championship. Check her out...

This is kind of a long story but I will try to make it short! Jenn had hired me a long while back to do her hair and bridesmaids hair for her wedding day. In the meantime she found out I was a photographer. Her planner on folly is also photographer and had already been hired to shoot the ceremony, so Jenn decided to have me stay and get "behind the scenes" and candids. It was so much fun! Yesterday I met Gabby and her mom Kelly at a park in mount pleasant for this session. Gabby is a VERY energetic and beautiful little 4 year old! We ran all over the place for about an hour...My favorites are the ones of her "dancing" and waving out to the "dolphins" in the harbor. She is a natural little model. :-)

Last month I had such a GREAT time working with these two, capturing their rehearsal and images for their wedding! The rehearsal was held on folly beach (my favorite place!), and the dinner at the Harbor Grille downtown, right on the water. What an awesome view at both locations! My friend Kelly emailed me the other day and called me "friendalina." I have been using that word ever since when I leave her a message. I love it! It's so funny and I have no idea why, but it made me laugh.
As you can probably tell, I'm trying to find ways to keep life a little "lighter" this week. After spending time with my mom, I am usually very drained. I don't want to be that way, it's just sad to hear your mom say,"what is your name again? where are you from?" Questions you'd ask someone when you first meet and you are trying to be reminded. Sometimes she does remember, but it's so hit or miss. It's like someone that has developed dementia and yes, these ARE symptoms of dementia, but from full-brain radiation. I wasn't prepared for this because the doctors didn't tell us this could happen. But what if they "had" told us? Would it have made a difference? Probably not.
We are all so used to having things be pretty predictable, in our routines, our relationships and lives. But life is never like that. There can be surprises, extremely difficult and emotional times, but also amazing and happy times too...IF you pay attention.
About a month ago, when I chose to give up my "hairbyjuliet" business (well, not technically until july of '09), there was a sequence of events that led to my decision. I didn't just wake up and say,"hair sucks! I'm quitting!" haha. It was seriously a deliberate and conscious decision based on some experiences I had.
Going through my mom's illness has made me see life differently. I had some "situations" with people that had no clue and were so completely self absorbed with themselves and rude. I got sick 2x in a month from exhaustion--I never get sick so this was a huge eye-opener. My friend Richard told me I was going to get to a point where I would have to choose, that it was too hard to do both.
God spoke to me loud and clear,"I've been TRYING to get your attention but you aren't listening." I saw I was running away from my life because I honestly didn't know how to really cope. I was on auto-pilot just going as fast as I could, staying as busy as possible, not really living but cramming a ton of appointments into a small space. I was a work-a-holic and I knew it.
I finally stopped. I listened, and I made changes. I chose the road actually "more" traveled in this case(so many photographers, very few "wedding" stylists). BUT, I knew it was the right thing. I had no doubts and felt this huge relief after the decision.
My long and drawn out story leads me to say this... Pay attention, slow down, spend less time running around or being self-absorbed and think of what you can do for others. Life is to be enjoyed and part of this is giving of yourself, your time, and loving others. This is when you are REALLY LIVING.

random silliness

Today I was so excited to go get a starbucks frappuccino. I never buy them, so I was really pumped.
I was in heaven walking through barnes and noble drinking my sugarfree vanilla coffee concoction, and walked out smiling, not noticing how slippery the cup was. I got to my car and SPLAT!! I DROPPED my cup, right next to my foot and the drink went flying all over my leg. HAHAHA! yes, I laughed. It was actually pretty hilarious. Not funny that I just lost $4.....my "heaven" was so short lived. Sometimes it is good just to laugh even if it's just at yourself for being a clutz. :-P

I am not sure if I have posted anything about my mom (Margaret) on this blog. I know I have in the past on my "hairbyjuliet" blog off and on, documenting my mom's fight with cancer.
If you are reading this, please pray for my mom. My mom has had cancer off and on for the past 7 years. It started as breast cancer, moved to her liver (was stage 4), was successfully treated until they found it in her brain. She had full brain radiation last October, and hasn't been the same since. She's lost alot of memory and is confused almost all the time. The radiation worked in the beginning but now the cancer is back as stage 2.
She is due to start on a clinical trial for a new drug, and oxygen therapy this week.
Please keep my mom in your prayers!!! If you have any prayer groups you belong to, I'd appreciate any support there as well.
As always, I so appreciate the love and support from everyone!

Family Reunion on Edisto Island

I loved watching the kids play in the sand, fly kites and slide on the water slide! I am a big "little" kid, so this was right up my alley.

Today I met with Natalie, a bride I'm working with in september. We met at "cupcake" downtown to go over the timeline for photos on her wedding day. Fortunately for me, she was also doing her "tasting" and I got to try a red velvet cupcake. YUM! Have you ever been there?? If you haven't, you should. I had an awesome time this past weekend with Susannah, Sean and their families and friends! It was so fun for me to document their rehearsal and dinner cruise the night before the wedding. Susannah had already booked me for hair and then realized I had a photo business--it worked out great because I was in town already! The bottom of the sky "fell" right before the cruise, but it cleared up and was a perfect night!

Ann and Jamie's wedding was beautiful! I loved the simple elegance, timeless dress and what an awesome group. It was all about the couple, their friends and loved ones around them! Sometimes the importance of a wedding day can be lost in the details....not this one. It was filled with love, happiness and joy. I was so honored to be a part and to capture this. I met Madeline and Clay through the awesome girls at a "Charleston Bride," Melissa and Leigh. Jonie who works with them did a beautiful job on the flowers and arrangements!
Madeline and Clay were such a sweet couple! The wedding was small and intimate, held at St. Stephens church on Anson St. and the reception was at Magnolias. They wanted to keep the day so simple, they were originally not going to hire a photographer. I was really thrilled to be able to help make memories for this couple, and give them huge props for the fact they really wanted to focus on the marriage more than the wedding itself! I love that.

WOW, I can't believe it's been over 2 weeks since my last entry! I've been a busy girl.....
My husband and I took a few days off to head down to tybee island and savannah. We rented this tiny little cottage built in the 1940's. We stayed here one other time and loved it.
A friend of the owner of the cottage left movies to watch that were all filmed in Savannah! We watched "Midnight in the Garden of good and evil." Ever seen it? It was actually pretty good, and I got to see parts of savannah I have never seen. Part of the Movie was filmed in Forsythe Park,
and I had never been there so Mat and I found it the next day. It was so pretty! The area surrounding the park had beautiful historic homes.
When we got back I went immediately back to work! I was hired to photograph a rehearsal, the wedding the next day, portraits the next day and another wedding the day after that! WHEW! I am in the middle of editing and I'm so excited to share photos from these events. Stay tuned!!

Sometimes when I'm back home, I'll rummage through all the old photos. This is actually one I have of my grandma we called "mimi." I snagged it once when I was there because I love it so much! It reminds me of how beautiful she was...in and out. I looked up to her so much....Her friendliness, charisma and way with people, her smarts, drive and strength. She always wore stylish clothes and had great hair. There are so many great memories I had with her, even though she died when I was only 10.
I understand the importance of photos and what they mean to us. My mom always said to me when I was growing up and didn't want my photo taken," Julie, you are going to be sad one day when there aren't many pictures of you!" She was right.
Remember this if you don't want your picture taken. One day it will bring back happy memories for you and also for the people who love you!

Chris is a super cool and talented musician that was playing and singing last year at a rehearsal dinner I was shooting at McCrady's downtown. I ran into him recently at ANOTHER rehearsal (I'll post pics from this soon) I was shooting at the sandcastle on kiawah island! I recognized him because I had taken photos of him and had them on file. We chatted it up and I mentioned to him my love for singing and music. I am really hoping to join him sometime in the coming months to sing! My schedule is a bit insane right now so it may not be until fall, but I'm not giving up!

Last week was SOOOOO busy!! I'm going to have to post a bunch of things in the next few days on this and my "beauty" blog to catch up! I'm recuperating today.....
On Thursday I helped my bud Travis Bell at a portrait shoot at magnolia gardens. Sad to say I live here in the area and this was my first time out there! We had such a great time. Babysitting Ben

Mat and I stayed at the family beachhouse on folly beach saturday night. We have both been working so hard we needed a break! It was fun to see my cousins and eat out at my favorite pizza place Andolini's (on james island). I have been visiting folly beach since I was a little girl! ...I always leave more relaxed and happy.

This is Ann and Bill, who were married yesterday at the Tidewater Chapel in Mount Pleasant. It was such a sweet and heartfelt wedding with only the bride, groom, officiant and me! I was so honored to be there and experience this. It was really special. A perfect ceremony for two people who were quietly kind and just lovely--Both of them. I could tell they really love each other!

Wow, I can't believe it's been a month since my last post here. I've been SO busy with hair, I haven't had time to shoot!! I am seriously vowing to make more time in the fall and next year to take more photographs. I love doing this so much. I never want to give up my "hairbyjuliet" job, but this is such a great balance and way to express myself. I love helping create outward beauty, but also capturing it from the inside-out!
I am excited about upcoming events I have booked though, in between all the stylin' I'm doing!
I'm also looking forward to helping Kate Thorton do a few events soon! I'm so honored she has asked me to help.

In other news, 2 friends and I are looking into an office space downtown! It hasn't solidified yet, but it's in the works. It will be a great spot to meet, do some hair and chat about photos. I'm doing alot of praying about this! If it's meant to be.....
